Ladies, please join us on Monday, August 21, at 7:00 p.m. for a Women’s Fellowship, Seasons of Change and Our God Who Does Not! We will gather in the Fellowship Hall for a time of fellowship, food, and resting in the truth that God does not change. These fellowships provide an opportunity within the life of our church to deepen existing relationships and build new ones. During this gathering we will hear from Marianne Appleman and Sarah Asire as they discuss God’s immutability and how this truth comforts, sustains, and grows us during seasons of addition and loss, joy and pain, and bounty and lean. You will also have an opportunity to hear about and register for our fall Bible study, God of Covenant: Genesis 12-50 by Jen Wilkin. All ladies are welcome and encouraged to invite guests as well as your school-aged daughters.

About Book Clubs

Join us for our 2023 Summer Book Clubs! The purpose of these Book Clubs is twofold: to encourage you in your spiritual growth by introducing you to theologically rich books and to deepen your relationships in our church by connecting you to other women interested in discussing those books in community.

We are offering four book clubs in the categories of theology, relationships, practical Christian living, and Christian biography. Be sure to pay close attention to the details of location and time before signing up as each of these clubs will meet at different times and places. Due to space constraints each book club will be capped depending on location, so sign up early!

Conscience

What It Is, How to Train It, and Loving Those Who Differ

Overview: Christian, meet your conscience.

What do you do when you disagree with other Christians? How do you determine which convictions are negotiable and which are not? How do you get along with people who have different personal standards?

All of these questions have to do with the conscience. Yet there is hardly a more neglected topic among Christians. In this much-needed book, a New Testament scholar and a cross-cultural missionary explore all thirty passages in the New Testament that deal with the conscience, showing how your conscience impacts virtually every aspect of life, ministry, and missions. As you come to see your conscience as a gift from God and learn how to calibrate it under the lordship of Jesus Christ, you will not only experience the freedom of a clear conscience but also discover how to lovingly interact with those who hold different convictions.

Authors: Andrew David Naselli (PhD, Bob Jones University; PhD, Trinity Evangelical Divinity School) is professor of systematic theology and New Testament at Bethlehem College & Seminary in Minneapolis and one of the pastors of the North Church in Mounds View, Minnesota.

J.D. Crowley (MA, Greenville Presbyterian Theological Seminary) has been doing missionary and linguistic work among the indigenous minorities of northeast Cambodia since 1994. He is the author of numerous books, including Commentary on Romans for Cambodia and Asia and the Tampuan/Khmer/English Dictionary.

Real Change for Real Sinners

Overview: How do Christians grow? Few question the call of the Bible to grow in godliness, but the answer to exactly how this happens is often elusive.

In this book, Dane Ortlund points believers to Christ, making the case that sanctification does not happen by doing more or becoming better, but by going deeper into the wondrous gospel truths that washed over them when they were first united to him.

Drawing on wisdom from figures throughout church history, Ortlund encourages readers to fix their gaze on Jesus in the battle against sin, casting themselves upon his grace and living out their invincible identity in Christ.

Author: Dane C. Ortlund (PhD, Wheaton College) serves as senior pastor of Naperville Presbyterian Church in Naperville, Illinois. He is the author of Gentle and Lowly: The Heart of Christ for Sinners and Sufferers and Deeper: Real Change for Real Sinners, in addition to a number of other books. Dane and his wife, Stacey, have five children.

Extraordinary Hospitality

for Ordinary People

Overview: Generous hospitality is a significant way in which God works through our lives to bring life to others, yet many of us feel ill-equipped and overwhelmed at the prospect, especially if we don’t have big houses and we are not wonderful cooks!

Carolyn Lacey encourages us to focus on the goal of hospitality, which is to reflect God’s welcoming heart, and shows us how we can all do that, regardless of our bank balance or living situation.

She explores seven ways in which we can reflect God’s character in the way we welcome others into our homes and into our lives, and so point people ultimately to Christ.

This practical and realistic book explores how to make generous hospitality part of everyday life without becoming exhausted and overburdened.

Author: Carolyn Lacey is a writer, speaker and pastor’s wife. She serves alongside her husband, Richard, in Worcester, UK, where she works part-time for her church as a women’s worker. She teaches the Bible regularly at women’s events and conferences, and is a mum to two grown-up children.

Newlywed American missionary Darlene Deibler Rose survived four years in a notorious Japanese prison camp set deep in the jungles of New Guinea. Thinking she was never to see her husband again, Darlene Rose was forced to sign a false confession and face the executioner’s sword, only to be miraculously spared.

Author: Darlene Deibler Rose was the first American woman to enter the Baliem Valley of New Guinea. She remarried after the war and resumed missionary work in Papua New Guinea and later the Australian outback. God called her home on February 24, 2004.

Praise in the Park

Sunday, May 28, we will gather at Greer City Park for our annual Praise in the Park! We will begin in the amphitheater at 5:30 p.m. for a time of singing and Scripture. Following the service, we’ll move down the hill near the picnic shelter for a church picnic. Heritage is providing subs, chips, cookies, and drinks at no cost to you. In order to help us plan, please let us know if you will eat with us. Sign up by Wednesday, May 24.

Invite a friend from the community, bring your lawn chairs and blankets, and join us for Praise in the Park!

Evening Prayer & Church Supper

On Sunday, March 12, we will gather at 4:30 p.m. for our monthly Evening Prayer. Following our prayer time, we will have a catered church supper. Come one or come all but come to pray. Chad Asire, one of our Shepherding Group Leaders, will preach a ten-minute sermon “Yahweh Who Sanctifies” in our evening teaching series, Walking in His Name. As Jesus did with His disciples at the end of the night on the eve of His arrest, we’ll close with a hymn. But the rest of the time we’ll be praying together for God to work in our lives, in the life of our church, and through our church for His name. Childcare will be available for children up through preschoolers.

In order to make adequate preparations, we need a count for the meal. We must have an accurate count for the food no later than 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, March 8, so please sign up below and make your plans to join us!

Welcome One Another

HBC Ladies – you are invited to enjoy worship and fellowship together as we welcome our guest speaker, Abi Byrd, for our 2023 Women’s Conference. Come learn what it means to “welcome one another as Christ has welcomed you, for the glory of God” (Romans 15:7).

When you think of hospitality, perhaps beautiful tablescapes, gourmet meals, and Instagram-worthy guest rooms come to mind. Or maybe you think of awkward small-talk, financial sacrifice, and panic cleaning. But what if God had something deeper and more significant in mind when he commanded his people to love and welcome other people into their lives?

Our world is experiencing what researchers are calling an “epidemic of loneliness.” Being on this side of a global pandemic in which we all experienced isolation more than usual, we have a better understanding of the basic human need to be in meaningful relationship with others. Who among us doesn’t want to belong and be welcomed into the lives of others? Who among us doesn’t want to be truly known and truly loved?

The good news for believers is that through Christ we have been welcomed like this! We who “were once far off have been brought near by the blood of Christ” (Eph.2:13). We who were strangers and slaves have been made sons and heirs (Gal.4)! Through Christ we have been shown the greatest act of hospitality, and this is what fuels and motivates our hospitality toward others.

Biblical hospitality is not an end in itself. It is a means toward fulfilling the great commission that we have received to share the good news of the gospel with our neighbors. It is a way for us to welcome other believers into our lives for the purpose of discipleship and deeper friendship. And it is a way to demonstrate love and care to “the least of these” among us.

Come, join us as we hear from God’s Word the importance of this basic, yet deeply meaningful practice. We have been welcomed so in return we welcome others!

Abi Byrd serves on staff as a Ministry Associate at McLean Bible Church, Loudoun Campus, in Leesburg, Virginia. She works in women’s ministry, discipleship, and coaching for Church Groups. She is an instructor for the Charles Simeon Trust women’s workshops, training women to study and teach the Bible. Abi has a BEd Honors degree in music and education from Cambridge University. She has been a teacher in elementary school and served with the children’s ministry on staff at Capitol Hill Baptist Church. She and her family have also served as missionaries in the UK and Kosovo with Radstock Ministries.

Technology pervades our world and our lives. We can hardly live a day without engaging it in some form. While advances in this field benefit us tremendously, technology also brings great challenges and even danger. How should Christ’s followers navigate these difficulties? How should we, as men, lead ourselves and our families through this minefield? Join fellow brothers for our winter topical study through Andy Crouch’s book, The Tech-wise Family. Crouch provides biblical principles and warnings for us to consider as we engage with technology and as we shepherd our families who do so.

Our men’s study will meet in The Cave on Thursdays at 6:15 a.m. or 7:00 p.m. from February 2 through March 9. Sign up online, purchase your own book, and bring it with you to the first study. Books are available through Amazon, ChristianBook, Baker Book House, and other online retailers.
