2022 Winter Classes

About Electives

As we seek to grow together, our church family pursues instruction and relationships. Sunday mornings at 11:00, Electives are the primary time for instruction. After the morning service, we gather in a variety of classes to learn practical ways we can grow in our walk with Jesus and in our relationships with each other. Electives run for varying periods of time, and our calendar year is divided into three sections or trimesters (winter/spring, summer, and fall) with breaks scheduled between. During the adult Electives, children, middle school, and high school students meet according to their grades.

6-Week WINTER ElectiveS

The Book of the Twelve:

Themes in the Minor Prophets

Overview: The 12 smaller prophetic books are not as familiar as bigger books like Isaiah, yet the themes are very similar. In this class we will study the 12 minor prophets as a book that should be read together. We will trace the themes that unite the individual books and that connect to the unfolding story of God. Some of the themes include covenant, God’s love, God’s wrath, and the hope of the coming Messiah. Join us as we grow in knowledge of and love for our great Savior.

Membership Matters

Overview: An orientation class that is essential for any Member who has not yet participated in the class or anyone wanting to become a Member of the Heritage Bible Church family. We believe that local church membership is vital for the growth of every follower of Jesus, and we will walk through the biblical foundation for membership, our Confession of Faith and Membership Covenant, as well as key aspects of body life at Heritage.

Walking Through Grief:

Helping One Another in the Darkness

Overview: Knowing that God works for His glory through life and death enables Christians to see each differently than the world does. Because grief and grieving are inevitable, we need to learn how to grieve God’s way, how to see God’s glory in our grief, how to celebrate life, and how to think about death. Change and loss provide an opportunity for the believer to understand that God works through the hard times. Come and share with us your experience of grief as we look into God’s Word together and learn how to navigate the challenges of loss.

Work and Vocation:

Understanding God's Call

Overview: Work is an essential part of life; it seems as normal as eating or breathing. In fact, we may feel as though we can’t escape it. Our experiences of work are all over the spectrum, and our views of work can be quite positive or incredibly negative. However, God has significant words about work, its place in our lives, and how we should view it. Be a part of this class as we think about what work is, survey current views of work, look at God’s thoughts on work, and see how our experience of work could be so much more fulfilling.

6-Week SPRING ElectiveS

Sundays, February 27 – April 3, 11:00 AM

Christianity Explored

Overview: Christianity Explored is a video series through Mark’s Gospel which presents a way of sharing the best news ever heard, and it gives people space and time to think about the big questions of life. It’s a perfect way to introduce a friend to Christianity in a low-pressure setting. Participants are asked to contribute $5 for the workbook and a copy of Mark. Invite a friend to join us for six sessions in this Gospel account as we find out more about the life of the person at the heart of the Christian faith—Jesus Christ.

Progressive Sanctification:

How We Grow and Change

Overview: Unfortunately, at times Christianity digresses into a form of doing something rather than becoming like Someone, Jesus Christ. For some believers the process of sanctification is centered more upon a list of “do’s” and “don’ts.” The emphasis is on performance but very little about becoming like Christ. Most of that comes from an outward man view of sanctification rather than an inner man change first. Sanctification is the continuous operation of the Holy Spirit in believers, making us holy by conforming our character, affections, and behavior to the image of Jesus Christ. Let’s explore how God does this in us through His Word.

Reading for Joy:

Malachi

Overview: How could David describe God’s Word as his delight (Ps. 119:174)? How could he say that the Scriptures were sweeter than honey and more precious than gold (Ps. 19:10)? Because in them he had glimpsed the beauty, majesty, power, and mercy of God Himself. That’s the reason we’re going to read the Word, specifically Malachi, together. This class is designed to equip each of us to read the Bible with another person, whether believer or non-believer. In fact, a goal for class participants is that you do outside of class what we do in class—invite another person to read Malachi with you just like we’re doing. Join us in this discussion-filled group effort to peer into the Scriptures so that we may find lasting joy.

Shepherding Group Leader Training:

How We Care for Each Other at Heritage

Overview: Why do we have small groups? What should happen in a small group? Why do we call them Shepherding Groups? Who gets to lead one? How is that done? In this class we’ll explore the biblical basis for small groups and our philosophical reasons for emphasizing them in our church. We’ll also look at details like what happens when you meet and how you lead a group discussion. From the big picture to the nuts and bolts, this class is designed to equip people to lead small groups in our church. The class is a requirement for those who will be new SG leaders; it is highly recommended for current SG leaders; and it is open to anyone in our church who is curious.
