Now Taking Questions for our Second Annual Elders Q&A

Now Taking Questions for our Second Annual Elders Q&A

Shepherds are part of God’s plan for the health and mission of every local church. Just consider all that God intends to accomplish through this role:

And he gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the shepherds and teachers, to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ, until we all attain to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to mature manhood, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ, so that we may no longer be children, tossed to and fro by the waves and carried about by every wind of doctrine, by human cunning, by craftiness in deceitful schemes. Rather, speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in every way into him who is the head, into Christ, from whom the whole body, joined and held together by every joint with which it is equipped, when each part is working properly, makes the body grow so that it builds itself up in love. —Ephesians 4:11–16

Christ is the goal and substance of our life as a church. Shepherds and teachers, which refers to one role, are part of how Christ gets this done.

Why Is This Good for Us?

One way our elders at Heritage seek to lead our church to maturity in Christ is by the simple work of answering questions. We do this in informal and private ways, and we do this in especially public ways such as our annual Elders Q&A. On November 22 at 4:30 p.m. we will host our second annual Elders Q&A.

This event serves a number of interlocking purposes:

  • To promote a culture of openness and vulnerability.
  • To model healthy question asking and answering.
  • To enhance our elders’ unity and insight into the ministry.
  • To clarify any ambiguities or gaps in our leadership for our members.
  • To instruct in biblical eldership and increase the visibility for our team.
  • To update the congregation on any timely projects or studies we’ve been working on.

We’ll plan for an hour and fifteen minutes. We won’t share dinner, as is our tradition at these meetings, due to COVID, but we’ll certainly bring that back next time around.

What’s On Your Mind?

If you have a question—think doctrine, church life, plans for our shared mission, etc.—you can get it to us in a variety of ways:

  • Text. Text your question to 864.735.7465.
  • Email. Email your question to elders@heritagebiblechurch.org.
  • Write. Grab a Connection Card on Sunday, scratch out your question, and drop that in an offering box.
  • Form. Submit a question here.
  • Tell. Communicate your question for the Q&A to an elder in person or through email. They’ll ask you to write it down so that we don’t lose your intent in translation, but you’re welcome to start with a conversation.
  • Show Up. Show up with your question on November 22nd. The elders will take some questions from a mic during the evening.

As a help in this process, aim to submit your questions by Sunday, October 25. This lead time helps us notice recurring themes, know how to devote time to particular questions, discuss any topics as a team if needed, and order our time in a way that best serves the congregation. We’ll certainly consider any questions that come in after that date.

As a reminder, we won’t be able to answer every question that gets asked. However, if you put your name on a question and we did not answer it at the Q&A, we will reach out to answer that question for you in person or by email. In some cases, we may devote a blog-post to the topic.

Before the Q&A, get acquainted with Heritage’s elders at the About Page. Also, here’s the recap of last years Q&A for those that couldn’t join us.

Men’s One-to-One Bible Study

Men’s One-to-One Bible Study

The book of Daniel can seem mysterious. There are lands and people quite foreign to us, stories which seem unbelievable, and visions which are downright strange. In a recent sermon series we explored the first four chapters of Daniel and saw the mighty power and reign of God over the affairs of this world and its kingdoms. However, there is much more to learn from Daniel.

For our Fall Men’s Bible Study, we will revisit Daniel, and this time we’ll get an overview of the whole book. Since our lives have been turned upside-down by the pandemic, our Bible Study will look different.

What?

We’ll be using the Good Book Guide for Daniel. Purchase your own copy online and make plans to participate.

Who?

Instead of meeting with a group of men at the church property each week, choose one other man you will meet with and do the study with. We’ll call this our “One-to-One Men’s Bible Study.” Find a brother in your Shepherding Group or choose another brother in our church and ask him to do this study with you.

When?

The two of you can meet whatever day of the week and whatever time works for you. You decide. However, the window of time we’re giving for this 7-week study is September 10-November 12. This is a 10-week window which will give you flexibility if you happen to miss a week here or there. To encourage you over the weeks of this study, we are planning (1) a weekly email and (2) two Zoom calls for a time of sharing. One Zoom call will take place mid-way through the 10 weeks, and one will occur at the end of the 10 weeks. These will be brief “check-ins” where we can share how God is at work in us through His Word. Make sure you sign-up below so that you are on the list and get our communication.

Women’s Fall Bible Study

Women’s Fall Bible Study

For many of us, Psalms is a favorite book of the Bible—and for good reason! While we won’t be able to cover every psalm this semester, we’ve selected nine psalms to help learn some ways to see the Psalms with even deeper appreciation and awe for the God who wrote them for us.

For this fall, we’ll be offering Small Group Discussions via Zoom each Tuesday morning at 9:30 a.m. or Tuesday evening at 7:30 p.m. Small group times will last about 40 minutes to an hour. A pre-recorded teaching video will be uploaded each week that will replace our regular Large Group Lessons. There will be options for both audio and video of the teaching lesson. You can listen or watch on your own or get together with friends. Either way, the order each week will generally flow this way:

  1. Complete Personal Bible Study throughout each week
  2. Login for Small Group Discussion via Zoom on Tuesdays
  3. Watch or listen to the Large Group Teaching Lesson. Link will be emailed each week to those who sign up.

Sign up online and pick up your study notebook in the Hudson Road lobby at Heritage on Sundays, August 30 or September 6 . Or stop by the HBC office Monday – Friday from 8:30 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. to pick up a notebook. Cost is $5. Email  with questions.

Building Bridges, A Conference for Sharing Our Faith

Building Bridges, A Conference for Sharing Our Faith

Due to the coronavirus situation Christianity Explored has canceled this year’s conference. However, we anticipate hosting the conference on April 17, 2021.

Bridges. They come in all different sizes and kinds. They cross different types of obstacles. They’re also a great picture for the kind of thing we want to build into the lives of our loved ones and neighbors who need Christ. We have salvation from sin and death. How can we get it to them in a way that is loving, clear, and compelling?

Join us on Saturday, April 25, from 8:30am–5pm for the Christianity Explored National Conference, held at Heritage. Rico Tice and Randy Newman are two godly men who have given their lives to helping churches grow in this grace of sharing the gospel. This conference is open to the region and we’ll have plenty of believers here from other gospel preaching churches. But we want to see the room brimming with our people, because we want to see the gospel reach our neighbors, and we think this conference will help us do that together.

Head over to the conference page to learn a bit about the conference talk topics and breakout sessions.

In the weeks ahead Trent will write from his blog introducing you to Rico and to Randy and some of their work. In the meantime, here are some brief biographies with some books you should look into.

True Friendship

Friendship. Making friends. Being a friend. These are concepts that even children recognize as important to our human experience. God has made us relational beings; He made us for friendship with Himself and with others. Yet our culture and our own sinful tendencies undermine these vital relationships. Come and hear pastor and author, Drew Hunter, as he addresses this essential topic.

Drew is the teaching pastor at Zionsville Fellowship in Zionsville, Indiana. He is the author of Made for Friendship: The Relationship that Halves Our Sorrows and Doubles Our Joys. Drew and his wife, Christina, live in Zionsville, Indiana, and have four children.

Dispatches from the Front: Luke’s Dispatches

During our 11:00 a.m. Elective hour on Sunday, November 24, we will travel with Tim Keesee as Dispatches from the Front goes to the Middle East, where Luke wrote of Gospel advance in the first centuries—stories which continue to unfold in our day. This new six-episode series, Luke’s Dispatches, opens in the book of Acts and then fast-forwards to tell of God’s work in the same regions today in order to underscore that what Jesus began, He continues, and He will complete! His Kingdom spans not only continents but also centuries, and the Gospel that was powerful in Luke’s day is still at work in our day! On November 24 we will watch the third episode in the Luke’s Dispatches as the film series goes to Turkey.

It has been over two years since we’ve had the opportunity to watch one of the Dispatches films, and for those of you who are new to Heritage, you won’t want to miss this special opportunity. We will all be greatly blessed by the ministry of our own Tim Keesee and Pete Hansen.
