The Arrival of the Bridegroom

Luke 5:33-39

About the Sermon

Once again, we arrive at a text where Jesus is confronted by the people of his time. In this case, concern arises that Jesus’ disciples are not walking in the same practices as the disciples of John and the Pharisees. Jesus responds with a metaphor, two parables, and a proverb. In each, his message is clear: something new has arrived, and it can’t be contained within the old ways of religious life. Jesus wants us to see that there was something those of his time were missing, and it was standing right in front of them. Luke 5:33-39 shows us how Jesus uses a wedding, clothing, and wine to instruct us on the new that has come and how we need to be ready to receive it with joy.

About the Series

Luke writes that we may be certain of the things that we have been taught. That is, confident in the good news about Jesus. Apparently some of the things we have been taught are so wonderful they are hard to believe. In his orderly account, Luke announces good news of great reversals in which God humbles the proud and exalts the humble. Peace with God through the forgiveness of sins really is available but on God’s terms. To show us how we must come to him, Luke introduces us to the characters Jesus lifted up and to the proud whom he brought low. In all this he compels us to humbly believe in the Son of the Most High God and to preach this good news of great joy to the end of the earth.
