Jesus, Suffering Servant

Isaiah 52:13–53:12

About the Sermon

Here we have a sermon on suffering. Not our suffering, or at least not exactly. Rather, a sermon on the suffering of our Lord, Jesus Christ. We have suffered many things. We would have opted out of any of it had we the chance. Jesus, on the other hand, was firmly resolved to suffer. Jesus was given the chance to opt-out not only by Satan in his wilderness temptation, but by his own disciples when Peter rebuked him for speaking of his coming sufferings. In this sermon we will meditate on the text of Scripture that Jesus had on his mind and heart as he headed to the cross.

About the Series

In Mark 8, the Apostle Peter correctly identifies Jesus with the famous words, “You are the Christ” (8:29). Peter believed Jesus was the Christ promised in the Old Testament Scriptures. But Peter did not fully understand the mission of the Messiah, who would come to suffer for his people. In this short series, we draw from Old Testament Scriptures to explore the fullness of that confession, a confession on which the church of the Lord Jesus is built.
