The purpose of our electives is to engage and equip the people of our church with the Word for the roles God has given them. The classes survey a variety of doctrines or topics, helping us to grow in our walk with Jesus and in our relationships with each other. We’re eager to dive into these studies with you.
During the adult Electives, children, middle school, and high school students meet according to their grades.

Overview: Churches today order themselves in a variety of ways. Even churches sharing like-minded convictions of the gospel choose to govern their local bodies in different ways. Is there a right or wrong way to approach the issue of establishing leaders, officers, and servants at the local church level? In this class, we will look to the Bible and ask: what do we observe in the Scriptural witness? How does the Bible describe the men who are to fill the role of “elder” and “deacon?” How are they qualified? What do they do? What does God’s word say about these important leadership and service roles in the local body? Join us for this short 3-week course as we answer these questions and many more. We pray you will be strengthened in God’s word to know his design for leading the local church!
Teachers: Kris Fraley, Tom Mackintosh

Week 2: What is a Deacon in Scripture?
Week 3: How do Elders and Deacons serve at Heritage?
Overview: Our God is a God who never relinquishes his sovereignty. . . ever. . . in anything. His word declares whatsoever goes out from his mouth will not return to him empty. It will accomplish his purpose and succeed in the thing for which he sent it (Isaiah 55:11). But what are we to make of a person’s response to the gospel? Does God hand over his sovereignty to his creatures in this one particular area? What implications are there for fulfilling Jesus’ command to make disciples and how does this affect the way we evangelize? Join us for this short 3-week course as we answer these questions and many more. We’ll dive into the Scriptures and see how God’s word answers these topics and many more. Pray for us as we seek to see what God will reveal in how he wants us to share the gospel in a lost and dying world that is his and his alone.

Overview: Our Lord Jesus commanded disciples to be baptized in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Baptism is a beautiful, public profession of one’s faith in the Gospel and their inclusion in the Church. It’s also the way the church publicly identifies the disciples she makes in obedience to Jesus. If you have believed in Jesus and need to be baptized—or if you just want to learn more about what we believe about baptism—the baptism class is for you. In this class we will answer three questions: What is baptism? Who should be baptized? How do we practice baptism at Heritage? You’ll be given helpful resources and spend time with a Heritage pastor to learn about baptism and next steps for getting baptized at Heritage.
Teacher: Trent Hunter

Week 2: Who Should Be Baptized?

Overview: The Bible contains three historical accounts of the life and teachings of Jesus Christ that scholars have identified as the “Synoptic Gospels.” The similarity in arrangement and substance of these books has raised some questions by Christians as to how best interpret these narratives considering their connections. Is there a good, balanced approach to understanding these gospels? Join us for this short 3-week course as we answer this question and many more. We’ll dive into the issues related to the study of the synoptics and discover how to best approach their interpretation. Come prepared and be encouraged by our study on this important biblical issue.
Teacher: Vincent Greene

Overview: “Never again,” God declared to Noah. Though evil would remain, “never again” would God destroy the earth by flood. So from the first days of creation in Genesis 3 until now, evil remains. Whether through the distant reach of the news or up close in our lives, every one of us is tempted to ask the same questions when confronted with that evil: “Why Lord?” Why allow this? If you are good and powerful, why does tragedy come? Are you not powerful enough or not good enough to stop it? Join us for this 3-week elective as we commit Biblical thought to these questions. We’ll hear from Scripture what God has to say about the existence of evil, his sovereignty over all things, and his eternal plan for his glory.
Teacher: Jason Read
