6-Week Electives

July 19-August 23, 2026

About Electives

The purpose of our electives is to engage and equip the people of our church with the Word for the roles God has given them. The classes survey a variety of doctrines or topics, helping us to grow in our walk with Jesus and in our relationships with each other. We’re eager to dive into these studies with you.

During the adult Electives, children, middle school, and high school students meet according to their grades.

Biblical Studies:

Colossians

Overview: In Colossians, Paul writes to a church that he did not plant and to people he had never met. Not unlike our own day, false teaching and fresh heresies were everywhere and threatened this church in its infancy. Paul decides to pen a letter laying out a fresh presentation of the gospel: Christ is Lord over all things, and he has accomplished victory over sin and death. Join us for this class as we investigate this church’s context and Paul’s message to them. We pray you’ll leave equipped and encouraged to tackle a world similar to the one we find in this letter.

The Doctrine of Salvation:

Part 2

Overview: Christians harkening back to the Protestant Reformation have declared that we are saved by grace through faith in Christ. But what does that actually mean? Numerous other false teachings in “Christian” circles might say the same thing. Even some cults might make similar claims using similar language. In this two-part class, we’ll investigate what the Bible means when it claims we are saved by grace through faith in Christ. Specifically in this second part, we’ll look to how the Bible describes how we grow after conversion and what we are looking towards. We pray that the Spirit will teach us how to understand these truths for assurance in our own salvation and as we proclaim salvation to those God places in our lives. Participation in part one of the class is not a prerequisite for taking part two. Anyone is welcome to join this class.

Introduction to Global Missions

Making the Biblical Case for God’s Image

Overview: Billions of people today are destined for eternity apart from Christ, and many of them have limited or no access to the gospel. The necessity for global missions is overwhelming. But with Adoniram Judson we can happily proclaim, “The prospects are as bright as the promises of God.” Christ has a plan, and it runs right through his church: “through the church the manifold wisdom of God might now be made known (Eph. 3:10).” The church has a mission, so our first task is to understand that mission, and the Bible is our best and only authoritative manual. In this introduction to global missions, we’ll open the Bible to learn the nature of the mission and the role of the local church. Join us and pray that God might grow our gospel ambition, so that through the church, the gospel might be made known to the ends of the earth.

The Sanctity of Life

James

Overview: Justice Harry Blackmun, the author of the opinion of the Supreme Court concerning the 1973 Roe vs. Wade decision, said, “We need not resolve the difficult question of when life begins.” While murder is as old as human history, there seemed to promulgate from this statement a culture of death and with it the destruction of God’s image bearers. Justice Blackmun’s statement presents a question: is the question of life’s beginning a difficult one? How should we as Christians think through the sanctity of human life? In this class, we’ll dive into the Scriptures and see what God’s word says of divine image bearers. Over the six weeks, we’ll cover the topics of abortion, euthanasia, and capital punishment. Join us as we gather around the Bible to meet this critical juncture head on with the word of God.

The Sign of Baptism

Understanding Gender and Sexuality in Light of the Bible

Overview: Our Lord Jesus commanded disciples to be baptized in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Baptism is a beautiful, public profession of one’s faith in the Gospel and their inclusion in the Church. It’s also the way the church publicly identifies the disciples she makes in obedience to Jesus. If you have believed in Jesus and need to be baptized—or if you just want to learn more about what we believe about baptism—the Baptism Class is for you. In this class we will answer three questions: What is baptism? Who should be baptized? How do we practice baptism at Heritage? You’ll be given helpful resources and spend time with a Heritage pastor to learn about baptism and next steps for getting baptized at Heritage.

Teacher: Trent Hunter
