6-Week Electives

April 12-May 24, 2026

About Electives

The purpose of our electives is to engage and equip the people of our church with the Word for the roles God has given them. The classes survey a variety of doctrines or topics, helping us to grow in our walk with Jesus and in our relationships with each other. We’re eager to dive into these studies with you.

During the adult Electives, children, middle school, and high school students meet according to their grades.

Biblical Studies:

Ecclesiastes

Overview: What is the meaning of life? Riches . . . Fame . . . Respect . . . Power? In his providence, God gave us a biblical author who had all he could ever want in all these things and his conclusion: all is meaningless. When we read these words, what are we to make of them? Are we here for this short time on earth for something that is completely meaningless? Join us for this 6-week course as we examine the words of the Preacher and see what we can learn from knowing there is nothing new under the sun. We’ll look at the vanity of many things and see there is one thing that keys us in to the meaning of life—something that is in fact not meaningless! We pray you leave encouraged from the words of the Preacher as we study the Scriptures together.

The Doctrine of Salvation:

Part 1

Overview: Christians harkening back to the Protestant Reformation declare that we are saved by grace through faith in Christ. But what does that actually mean? Numerous other false teachings in “Christian” circles might say the same thing. Even some cults might make similar claims using similar language. In this two-part class, we’ll investigate what the Bible means when it claims we are saved by grace through faith in Christ. We pray as you join us for this first six weeks that the Spirit will show us how to understand these truths for assurance in our own salvation and as we proclaim salvation to those God places in our lives.

Evangelism and World Religions

Making the Biblical Case for God’s Image

Overview: The religious landscape in our community is constantly changing and is certainly different than the last generation. Our uncle is Catholic, our co-worker is Mormon, and the next-door neighbor is fasting for Ramadan. What are we to make of this ever-shifting environment? How are we to understand the backgrounds and pre-suppositions each person harbors? Most importantly, what tools can I learn so as to be an effective witness of the gospel for each person? Join us the next six weeks as we look at six of the most prevalent religions in our community. We’ll look at their beliefs, what they think of Jesus, and our best roads to fruitful gospel conversations. We pray you leave equipped with new confidence to share the gospel with those who so desperately need it!

Holy Affections

James

Overview: Affections. We all have them and sometimes we aren’t sure what to make of them. Strong affections for good things can be the core of idol worship and weak affections can lead to immense apathy. Scripture also warns us not to be “lukewarm”, yet we often are. The result can be half-hearted creatures fooling about while infinite joy is offered. What we need are holy affections that enflame our desire for God. We need God to rewire our hearts through habits of grace that cause our hidden idols to be exposed. In short, we need change—heart change—not the rededication of outward actions through self-effort but the radical reformation of inward desires through the power of the gospel. Join us for six weeks as we explore what holy affections are, why we need them, and how God stirs them up in our hearts.

The Sign of Baptism

Understanding Gender and Sexuality in Light of the Bible

Overview: Our Lord Jesus commanded disciples to be baptized in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Baptism is a beautiful, public profession of one’s faith in the Gospel and their inclusion in the Church. It’s also the way the church publicly identifies the disciples she makes in obedience to Jesus. If you have believed in Jesus and need to be baptized—or if you just want to learn more about what we believe about baptism—the Baptism Class is for you. In this class we will answer three questions: What is baptism? Who should be baptized? How do we practice baptism at Heritage? You’ll be given helpful resources and spend time with a Heritage pastor to learn about baptism and next steps for getting baptized at Heritage.

Teacher: Trent Hunter

Week 2: Who Should Be Baptized?
