The purpose of our electives is to engage and equip the people of our church with the Word for the roles God has given them. The classes survey a variety of doctrines or topics, helping us to grow in our walk with Jesus and in our relationships with each other. We’re eager to dive into these studies with you.
During the adult Electives, children, middle school, and high school students meet according to their grades.

Overview: Our God is a God who never relinquishes his sovereignty. . .ever. . .in anything. His word declares whatsoever goes out from his mouth will not return to him empty. It will accomplish his purpose and succeed in the thing for which he sent it (Isaiah 55:11). But what are we to make of a person’s response to the gospel? Does God hand over his sovereignty to his creatures in this one particular area? What implications are there for fulfilling Jesus’ command to make disciples and how does this affect the way we evangelize? Join us for this short 3-week course as we answer these questions and many more. We’ll dive into the Scriptures to see how God’s Word answers these topics and what it means for our witness. Pray for us as we seek to see what God will reveal in how he wants us to share the gospel in a lost and dying world that is his and his alone.

Week 1: Divine Sovereignty and Human Responsibility

Week 3: Why it Matters
Overview: Jesus testified that his ultimate purpose for coming into the world was to “give his life as a ransom for many.” But that’s not all the incarnate Christ accomplished during his life here on earth. We also know that as the second person of the Godhead and the “image of the invisible God” Jesus reveals to us something about God himself. In the Gospel according to Mark we see Jesus as the One who both reveals to us the holiness of God and then rescues us from that holiness. Join us for this 3-week study as we consider how Mark’s presentation of the holiness of God ought to stir our hearts to worship God rightly and treasure Christ more fully.

Overview: Our Lord Jesus commanded disciples to be baptized in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Baptism is a beautiful, public profession of one’s faith in the Gospel and their inclusion in the Church. It’s also the way the church publicly identifies the disciples she makes in obedience to Jesus. If you have believed in Jesus and need to be baptized—or if you just want to learn more about what we believe about baptism—this baptism class is for you. In this class we will answer three questions: What is baptism? Who should be baptized? How do we practice baptism at Heritage? You’ll be given helpful resources and spend time with a Heritage pastor to learn about baptism and next steps for getting baptized at Heritage.

Overview: Our world no longer knows what it means to be a man or a woman. The truth and glory of God have been exchanged for lies and Christians are often left confused on how to understand it all. This class will help us orient ourselves first to truth in God’s Word and second to the lies of the culture, ultimately so that we might both remain anchored and bring light to dark places. We’ll consider who God made us to be as image bearers in making us “male and female” as we overview the key terms and teachings of the LGBTQIA+ movement. Our goal will be to learn to speak clearly and truthfully so that we might bring the truth of the gospel into the lives of those we know and love. Join us for this timely task in equipping ourselves to engage the culture with God’s Word.

Overview: Christian parents are eager to bring their children to church, to Sunday school, and mid-week youth groups. They are excited to read them Bible passages, practice memory verses, explain wise and thoughtful living in hopes that they will change their behavior. We want our children to act like Christians, but are we affecting their hearts toward Jesus? Are they developing a deep love for Christ? Will this love persist into adulthood? We know there’s no formula to guarantee salvation for our children, but there are practical habits we can foster in church, in class, and at home to drive gospel conversations and show the children around us the glorious and awesome God that we serve. Please join us as we explore and learn the various ways to show the young ones in our lives the beauty of Jesus.
