6-Week Electives

July 20 - August 24, 2025

About Electives

The purpose of our electives is to engage and equip the people of our church with the Word for the roles God has given them. The classes survey a variety of doctrines or topics, helping us to grow in our walk with Jesus and in our relationships with each other. We’re eager to dive into these studies with you.

During the adult Electives, children, middle school, and high school students meet according to their grades.

Biblical Studies in the Gospel of John

Mark

Overview: The gospel of John, like Genesis, is a book of beginnings. The prologue immediately introduces us to Jesus, not just as a man, but as the eternal God of the universe who was there in the beginning. Jesus’ person and work is all over every page but, at the end of the book, John tells us plain as day why the Spirit inspired him to write. Join us for this 6-week class as we take a deeper look into John’s gospel considering its contexts, themes, and purposes. We pray that each participant leaves with a greater appreciation for this Holy Spirit inspired work as he calls us to grow in faith and explore the joys of eternal life—both now and in the future!

Teachers: Sandy McCormick, Harry Clement

Week 2: Author, Date, and Occasion
Week 3: Where John Fits in the Bible’s Redemptive Story

The Bible and Marriage

Jude

Overview: Turn on any sitcom and you get the same story. There is a family with a dimwitted man who needs his frantic and overwhelmed wife to do everything for him so that the house can barely hang together by a thread. Marriage in our culture today is unfortunately more often a punchline than it is a gift. Is this the way it is supposed to be? What does God’s Word say about marriage? Should we care about the marriages in our homes, local church, society at large? How can a strong theology of marriage not just impact our households, but civilization as a whole? This class is not just for the married but will be encouraging no matter what chapter of life you find yourself in. All Christians should care about marriage and if you join us for this 6-week class, we will look to the Bible and what it says about marriage. We pray you’ll leave with a deeper understanding of God’s design, a greater love for your husband or wife, and a bolstered desire to honor and glorify God in your marriage or future marriage!

The Doctrine of Christ

Understanding Gender and Sexuality in Light of the Bible

Overview: The Doctrine of Christ became the premier source of controversy in the early days of the Church. Councils, creeds, and definitions were convened and developed in attempts to gain clarity of the Bible’s Christological teaching. As the church today, we benefit from a rich Christology that has been passed down to us from previous generations of faithful Christians. Join us for this 6-week course as we consider the challenging but fruitful doctrines concerning the person and work of Christ. We pray this class will strengthen your confidence in our Lord as you prepare to share him with your unbelieving friends and neighbors.

Week 2: The Deity of Christ
Week 3: The Incarnate Christ: Hypostatic Union

What Is the Mission of the Church?

Making the Biblical Case for God’s Image

Overview: Some have taken the “mission” of the church and extended it to almost anything. Soup kitchens, clothing drives, digging wells in foreign lands, and even social justice issues have risen to the top as the church’s “mission.” But what does the Scripture teach concerning the church’s mission? How do we as a local body tackle the charge that the Lord has given us in his word? Join us for this 6-week class as we consider these questions and many more. We pray that through this class our local church will be emboldened to understand the church’s mission and carry forth the focus and intentionality needed to accomplish it successfully.
